Investing and speculating

The Sunday Times carried a story about young people who were investing in stocks and CFD (contract for differences). Some made trading losses but are still keen to continue "investing" in the market.

It is important to use the correct term to describe the activity. It should be called "trading" or "speculating" and not "investing".

When one "invest" in a company, one has to study the fundamentals of the company with the intention of holding it for many years to earn its dividend and the long term capital gain. I  know of people who bought blue chip shares and kept them for 40 years. That is "investing".

Those who buy and sell shares to make a short term gain should be called "speculators" or "traders" and not "investors". There is nothing wrong with speculating or trading in shares, or gambling in the casino, if the speculator is aware about the risk and is mentally prepared for the consequence of making a loss, while pursuing a gain. It would be wrong to be deluding that they are "investing" in the stock market.

I hope that our financial journalists will use the correct term to describe the activity, so that the speculators are not deluded into thinking that they are carrying out an "investing" activity.

Capitalism is in crisis

Many people still think that capitalism is a good economic model. The truth is - it is the cause of many of the bad things that are happening around the world - greed, cheating, high cost of living, stress, low birth rate, crime. Read this article to get a similar view:

QUOTE:

The economic system underlying empire-building today has a name: capitalism. Or, more precisely, a predatory corporate capitalism that is inconsistent with basic human values. This description sounds odd in the US, where so many assume that capitalism is not simply the best among competing economic systems but the only sane and rational way to organise an economy in the contemporary world.
Although the financial crisis that began in 2008 has scared many people, it has not always led to questioning the nature of the system.
"Although the financial crisis ... scared many people, it has not always led to questioning the nature of the system."
That means that the first task is to define capitalism. It is an economic system in which:
  • Property, including capital assets, is owned and controlled by private persons;
  • Most people must rent their labour power for money wages to survive; and
  • The prices of most goods and services are allocated by markets.
"Industrial capitalism", made possible by sweeping technological changes and imperial concentrations of capital, was marked by the development of the factory system and greater labour specialisation. The term "finance capitalism" is often used to mark a shift to a system in which the accumulation of profits in a financial system becomes dominant over the production processes.
Today in the United States, most people understand capitalism in the context of mass consumption - access to unprecedented levels of goods and services. In such a world, everything and everyone is a commodity in the market.
In the dominant ideology of market fundamentalism, it's assumed that the most extensive use of markets possible, along with privatisation of many publicly owned assets and the shrinking of public services, will unleash maximal competition and result in the greatest good - and all this is inherently just, no matter what the results.
If such a system creates a world in which most people live in poverty, that is taken not as evidence of a problem with market fundamentalism but evidence that fundamentalist principles have not been imposed with sufficient vigour; it is an article of faith that the "invisible hand" of the market always provides the preferred result, no matter how awful the consequences may be for real people.
How to critique capitalism in such a society? We can start by pointing out that capitalism is fundamentally inhuman, anti-democratic and unsustainable:

Calculation of interest rate

Courts advertised a 42" HD LED TV for a cash price of $799 and gives an option to pay in weekly installments of $7.91 over 48 months. What rate of interest is included in this plan? Interest rate on installment payments

This article shows how to calculate the interest rate on installment payments, and how to save on the heavy interest charges. It is advisable for those who buy expensive items on installment payments, especially young people, to realize the heavy cost of this payment plan. The interest rate has increased from 36% previously to 48% per annum now. It is quite expensive!

Accusations not yet costing Cain in early states (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Republicans in early voting states like Iowa seem to be giving Herman Cain the benefit of the doubt for now ? but they also say they need to know more, nearly a week after the disclosure that he was accused of sexually harassing women who worked for him in the 1990s.

"It's concerning, but it's not a big deal," said Cindy Baddeloo of suburban Des Moines, one of more than two dozen undecided Republican voters interviewed in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina in the days since the allegations ? which Cain has repeatedly denied ? surfaced.

"Nobody's perfect," she said.

The same for LaDonna Ryggs, chairwoman of Spartanburg County GOP in South Carolina. "You give me some substance to the questions, and then we'll talk."

With the furor over the allegations showing no signs of abating, it's an open question whether supporters of Cain's presidential campaign will stick with him, or whether the one-time long shot can increase his base of support at a time when many early state GOP activists are making up their minds.

And while the Georgia businessman topped a national poll taken this week, the new round of questions follow doubts that had already begun to form about him before he became enmeshed in this latest controversy.

"Fair or unfair, is anybody more likely to vote for Herman Cain as a result of these allegations? The answer is no," said Phil Musser, a GOP strategist unaffiliated with any campaign.

Cain was sharply critiqued by his rivals over his tax proposal during a debate in Las Vegas last month. And questions later arose over his loyalty to the GOP base's most enduring litmus test, opposition to abortion, after he said in an interview the decision was a matter of choice.

And the timing is problematic for Cain, too, just two months before the Iowa caucuses and as Cain presumably should be seeking to close the deal with undecided caucus-goers in the state.

He's not slated to return to Iowa for another two weeks, and, if he follows through, he will have made just one trip to the leadoff caucus state over the course of three months. Meanwhile, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is stepping it up here, Texas Gov. Rick Perry's gung-ho on advertising and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is hitting his stride.

Cain denied all along that he made suggestive comments to female subordinates while serving as president of the National Restaurant Association. Yet, over the past five days, he has given conflicting accounts about what, if anything, he knew about the alleged incidents as well as whether he knew about financial settlements two of his accusers reportedly received from the trade group.

He's blamed the mainstream media, liberals and Perry's campaign, which said it had nothing to do with it. A black conservative, Cain has said his race has played a factor in the turmoil.

And Friday, a lawyer for one of Cain's accusers disclosed that she alleged "several incidents of sexual harassment" in a complaint filed more than a decade ago, a fresh accusation that complicated the Republican presidential hopeful's determined bid to lay the politically explosive controversy to rest.

"As far as I can see, it wasn't any different than Bill Clinton," said New Hampshire Republican Howard Burrows, arguing Cain could survive the episode.

Likewise, none of the Iowa Republican activists interviewed at a GOP banquet in Des Moines where most of Cain's rivals spoke Friday said the allegations disqualify Cain from their support, or that he should quit the race.

"People are so much more focused on the economy," said Des Moines area Republican Jason McKibben. "They're tired of gutter politics."

Republicans nationally haven't bolted the former national restaurant chain CEO who has recently risen from obscurity to near the top of national polls with Romney.

And a new Washington Post-ABC News survey taken after the allegations emerged Sunday showed Cain and Romney running nearly even atop the field of 2012 GOP presidential hopefuls, with most Republicans dismissing the harassment allegations. Seven in 10 Republicans say reports of the allegations don't matter when it comes to picking a candidate.

But in a sign of the possible danger ahead, the poll found that Cain slipped to third place among those who see the accusations as serious, and Republican women were significantly more likely than men to say the allegations make them less apt to support the businessman.

While the questions apparently haven't struck a blow against Cain in Iowa, their persistence is giving some GOP caucus-goers pause at a critical time.

A poll of likely Iowa caucus-goers sponsored by The Des Moines Register last week showed Cain narrowly leading in Iowa.

But Cain has a smaller campaign staff in the early states than many of his rivals. And he has only visited Iowa once in more than two months, while others are aggressively trying to claim an edge in the fluid caucus campaign.

The questions aren't discouraging Iowa state Rep. Henry Rayhons from siding with Cain ? yet.

"He's got to come clean, or people are going to keep harassing him about it," said Rayhons. "The longer it hangs out there, the less likely I am to support him."

Unemployment benefit in USA

This article gives a good explanation of the system of unemployment benefits in the USA. The benefit is given for a short period, to help the unemployed people to tide over a short period so that they can find the next job. This usually works well, except in a prolonged recession (which is happening now). Apart from helping to relieve hardship, the unemployment benefits help to spur economic growth. The question that the USA has to face is how to cope with the prolonged recession. President Obama wants to extend the unemployment benefit, but needs Congress to approve the additional funding (as the US debt is already too high!).

Negative comments about Forex Schools

Dear Mr. Tan,
There are many negative comments about various Forex schools in Singapore. Some could be fake, some could be real. Whatever it is, government won't do anything base on rumours I suppose, unless many students lodge complaints like Clement Chiang's case.

But I believe something can be done:

1. Stop all the schools who claim themselves to be number 1, especially in their official website. Example of such schools are JF Lennon and Powerup Capital. How do they even gauge themselves to be number 1? It is dangerous for the public.

2. Warn Powerup Capital to remove their 100% accuracy claim in their website as there is no such thing as 100% in financial market isn't it?

3. Forex trainers to undergo exams and certify to teach. A person who prescribe medicine without being a certified doctor could be dangerous.

4. Forex trainers to produce their own live trading results for a period of time before getting the certificate as well.

5. Probably all the students who sign up for any course, are needed to send feedback to the MAS or whoever just after the course, being reminded by the trainers.
One of the questionnaires could be "Did the trainer state all the possible risk". Probably the second feedback is needed after some time as well because students need to try out the things taught for a period of time.

6. If the trainer tells the audience that his student make $10,000 from $2000 after 3 months for example, then he should get a print screen of the real live statement.
The name of the student should be there. The account number can be blackened. So as not to have empty talk and cheat the people. They must also claim that not all students could get this result.

I am sharing these because you may have the influence or power to help eliminate any possible bad practices.

My observation.
When the beloved King of Bhutan recently married, the whole country rejoiced. Singapore should learn from Bhutan, rather than pass negative comments about Bhutan. Read this article and see the 1,000 over comments.

Kim Kardashian Divorce Lawsuit Is 'Deadly Serious'

'I desire for American people to have better television to watch,' comedian Rob Delaney says of suing over Kim's split with Kris Humphries.

Comedian/plaintiff Rob Delaney wants you to know that his lawsuit against Kim Kardashian, Ryan Seacrest, E! and Comcast is no laughing matter.

Delaney told MTV News on Tuesday that while he has never filed a lawsuit before, he is feeling confident via the support he's received since announcing his plans to sue over Kardashian's impending divorce from Kris Humphries.

"I've never sued anyone before. I've never been sued, but I'm against frivolous lawsuits, of course," he said. "It took something deadly serious for me to come out of the woodwork and mount this case. Ever since I announced, I've had numerous lawyers offer their support pro bono, and in America, you can kind of do whatever you want with the law. Michelle Bachmann is a lawyer, the Supreme Court decided [the presidency] in 2000, so there's a tradition here that I feel supports me. The Supreme Court, for example would be behind me."

And although Delaney has plenty of supporters, there are also those who might accuse him of grandstanding for publicity purposes and hitching his cause to a media storm. Delaney has a thoughtful response to the naysayers:

"Are people accusing me of [staging] a PR stunt? Absolutely, and that's valid. When I hear that, I'm not like, 'What are you talking about?' I get it. I'm a comedian, and this is happening on a television, so sure, I'm happy to draw attention to it, but if the comedy were chocolate, because we just had Halloween, the coating, the nougat of this matter is my true love for humanity and Kim Kardashian herself," he promised. "Again, I don't hate her, I want her to be married and happy, and I desire for American people to have better television to watch."

All things considered, Delaney's case is a bit grandiose. It's very likely that even the most skilled lawyers would not have very high hopes for his chances at a victory or acknowledgment in court. This is a fact Delaney knows full well but hopes his crusade might help just one person change his/her television viewing habits.

"I'm not totally insane, so I know that this might not come to fruition exactly how I envision it," he said. "But if we can get a few more people, if we can get a 12-year-old girl watching ['Keeping Up With the Kardashians'] to think, 'You know what? Kim Kardashian is a very awful role mode and I shouldn't watch that show.' Literally, if one girl in, let's say, North Dakota, sees this and says that, then we won. That's worth more than $18 million, certainly."

Should Rob Delaney be suing over Kim Kardashian's failed marriage? Let us know in the comments.
