9/11 families press court to get list of kin (AP)

NEW YORK ? Several Sept. 11 victims' relatives who hope to get a New York City-maintained list of next of kin for those killed in the attacks took their case before a judge Wednesday.

The family members oppose a plan to put about 9,000 unidentified pieces of victims' remains underground in the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. They want the list compiled so families can be polled about the issue.

Family members were consulted and OK'd the arrangement, city and memorial officials and some other victims' relatives have said. And releasing the list would violate families' privacy, the city has said.

The relatives also say they were never consulted about the city's plan to place the remains underground. The city and memorial foundation have said they conducted an extensive effort to include families in planning, and the plan for the remains has been known for years.

"The argument that this is known is incorrect. If it was well-known, we wouldn't be here today," the families' lawyer, Norman Siegel, said as about a half-dozen of the relatives who are suing watched from the courtroom audience, some wearing photographs and pins with their loved ones' names and images.

"And that's the underlying issue here: Who decides where the remains will go? Does the government decide, or do the families decide," or what obligations does the government have to consult them, he asked.

The lawsuit proposes releasing the list only to a retired judge, who would send out a letter on the plaintiffs' behalf. The city argued that under public-records law, the list would have to be released publicly if it were released at all, and that would invade victims' families' privacy and subject them to a deluge of unwanted solicitations and communications.

"There' a great privacy interest in names, home addresses of 9/11 victims' families," Thaddeus Hackworth, a city lawyer, told the judge. The fact that the relatives were caught up in the terror attacks "should not also mean that these individuals have given up all rights to privacy," he said.

Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Cynthia Kern didn't immediately rule or say when she would. But she asked both sides whether they might be able to work something out.

"Why would the city not want to give notice to family members about what's going to happen with the remains?" she asked.

The families want the remains places someplace accessible, and separate from the museum, Siegel has said.

Why employers prefer to employ foreigners

Dear Mr. Tan,
There are a few reason that companies like foreigners than singaporean. A lot have been pointed out - just name a few here.

1) lower cost for compaines
2) no ns liability
3) foreigner willing to work longer hours

But I think the main reason is employment agnecy. The facts is that if the companies wanted to employ a staff, they would out source to the employment agency to get the employment done. But here is the different, employer do not need to pay the employment agency to hire if they get the foreigner as foreigner pays thousands of dollars to comes to singapore to work. If the employer wants to get a singaporean to work, then they have to pay for the services rendered by the agency - up to 1 month of the pay.

Solutions: Government should pass a law that required  all employer to pay the agency a fix amount of dollars to employment agency if they engaged their services. And all successfully employed person have to pay up to a month of their salary to the agency as well (can be pay in installment) . Thus this two combination works out to be almost the same income for the agency, which they would switch their mindset to get singaporean employed.

What is your view on this, Mr Tan.

William
Many people put their savings in a life insurance policy as a form of investment. Unfortunately, the policy is a bad investment, as it takes more than 10 years to break even, after paying off the commission and other expenses and finally gives a poor yield - not enough to cover inflation.

It is easy to invest your money on your own. You can open an account with a stockbroker and buy any of the following:

  • Exchange traded fund, e.g. STI ETF
  • REITS (real estate trust)
  • Blue chip shares, e.g. DBS, SingTel, SPH, SIA, Starhub
It cost your $3,,000 to buy 1,000 units of the ETF. You may have to save for a few months (in your bank account) before collecting enough money to buy the ETF.

You can learn about these investments by attending the FISCA workshop on financial planning. Details can be found here.

Investment banks hire risk takers

This article explains the difference between commercial and investment banking. There was a law in USA called the Glass-Stegall Act that required them to be separated. It was a good and sensible law, which was unfortunately repealled.

Risk taking is the same as gambling. When you bet in a casino, you are taking a speculative risk. When you trade stocks or currencies, you are also gambling. It makes no difference whether you gamble in a casino or work in the trading desk of an investment bank. There should be a law against banks engaging in gambling!

Critical year policy

Many policyholders bought a "critical year policy" in the belief that they can stop paying premium after that period. They were disappointed to learn that they had to pay premium for longer than the expected period and cannot get the insurance company to honour the "promise". What has happened?

If the policyholder read the actual policy document, he would have found that the word "critical year" is not mentioned in the policy. It was actually a marketing presentation. The insurance agent took the dividends paid in the past and assumed that the same rates would be paid in the future, and also that it was possible to accumulate the dividends to earn an interest rate of 6% per annum.

The actual rates of dividends paid were lower than projected, due to the low investment yield. The interest rate credited on the dividends were also lower than the 6% projection. With both impacts, the accumulated dividends were not sufficient to stop the premium payment.

There was an example of this policy given in my book, "Get value from your life insurance policy". You can buy the book here. You can also learn about some of the other policies to avoid.

Fall Pet Tips , Dog, Cat and other Pet Friendly Travel Articles

Tags: fall pet tips, seasonal pet tips

IMAG0017Autumn is a busy time for many families, the kids go back to school, schedules change, and it?s time to put away some of the summer stuff and pull out the blankets and long-sleeve shirts. It?s also an important time of year for maintenance on your house and cars. However, don?t forget to make sure your pet is safe and happy as the seasonal transitions begin.

Here are 5 Fall pet tips to keep them safe and happy:

1: Be careful with any insecticides and rodenticides. Using toxic poison to repel unwanted critters from making a home in your home can put your pet in danger. If your dog or cat ingests any of the poisons it can be fatal. Instead try using humane mousetraps but if you must use some rodenticides, keep the carton out of reach of your pet and use it in areas that are inaccessible to your pet.

2: Keep your pet warm. If your pet has had a shorter cut for the warmer months, it is time to let it start growing in. If your pet has little or no hair, it?s time to pull out the pet sweaters. Also, make sure there are no drafts near your four-footed friend?s bed and and dry your dog well during cooler days after a bath to prevent chills.

3: Car maintenance and coolants can be dangerous to your pet. Cooler weather means it is time to weatherize the car and change the coolant. Instead of using a ethylene glycol based one try switching to a propylene glycol based one. The propylene one is less toxic to pets. Your dog or cat may walk through a small puddle in the garage so make sure to clean up after you?re done. Also, now is the time when you check under the car before starting it as cats may snuggle up to sleep near a warm engine on cold days.

4: Watch out for snakes! Snakes are starting to look for places to hibernate for the winter and they can be pretty hostile about being disturbed. If your dog and you are on a hike, be careful of letting him dig around and run through bushes. Snake bites can be harmful to your pet and some snakes are venomous. Keep your pets away from areas where snakes tend to hang out.

5: Keep cats inside! Cooler weather seems to bring out more critters at night. If your cat does go outside, make sure he?s in by evening. Coyotes, raccoons, and possums can get into scuffles with your cat and it can end badly.
