High cost of living and low wages
Killer cantaloupe, scary sprouts ? what to do? (AP)
MILWAUKEE ? Avoid foreign produce. Wash and peel your fruit. Keep it refrigerated. None of these common tips would have guaranteed your safety from the deadliest food outbreak in a decade, the one involving cantaloupes from Colorado.
Whether it's sprouts or spinach, turkey or hamburger; whether the government conducted double, triple or quadruple inspections, the truth is that no food will ever be completely free of risk.
And a few foods have become so risky that certain people such as children, pregnant women and the elderly may do best to avoid them altogether until growers and the government figure out how to make them safer, some food experts say.
An unappetizing fact: Although the current cantaloupe outbreak has been tied to just one farm in Colorado, it's at least the 19th outbreak involving that melon since 1984. It's also the first one caused by listeria, a germ that actually likes to be in the refrigerator and thrives in this fruit, which cannot be cooked unless you want to eat melon mush.
Listeria also prompted a California farm to recall bags of chopped romaine lettuce on Thursday because of possible contamination, though no illnesses have been reported. The greens from Salinas-based True Leaf Farms went to an Oregon distributor and possibly at least two other states ? Washington and Idaho.
So what should you do if you see cantaloupe on a salad bar or at the grocery store? Can you be sure all of the tainted stuff has been pulled from the market, since the last bad melons were shipped on Sept. 10? What if no one knows where the cantaloupe was grown?
"If the store can't tell them or the restaurant can't tell them, I would not buy it at all," said Chris Waldrop, director of the Food Policy Institute at the Consumer Federation of America.
Laura Anderko, a Georgetown University public health expert, went a step further.
"Honestly, as a nurse, I would tell people don't eat the cantaloupe until this thing resolves itself," she said. "This stuff happens because our system is not as tight as it needs to be."
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has confirmed 13 deaths and 72 illnesses in the outbreak so far, has not told people to stop buying cantaloupe. However, the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration cannot even say where all of the tainted melon went, because it was sold and resold to many distributors across the nation.
"When in doubt, throw it out," is the CDC's advice to consumers who have any cantaloupe whose origins they can't determine.
"Even if the cantaloupe is gone, you need to wash the drawer or shelf it may have been on" to make sure other foods don't become contaminated, said Caroline Smith DeWaal, director of food safety at the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
Beyond that, each outbreak brings fresh lessons on how to make produce safer. And while some of these things aren't guarantees, they can cut the odds you'll lose at the food safety lottery.
Some new tips food experts offered Thursday:
? Shop more often and consume fresh fruits and vegetables within a few days. This gives germs less chance to multiply and gives you more nutrients from your food, too.
? Don't just wash a melon. Scrub it under running water to rinse off any dislodged germs, and let it dry. If you cut it while it's still wet, "you may be sliding the pathogens more easily from the outside to the inside" on the knife, DeWaal said.
? Keep the fridge cold, 40 degrees or lower. Higher than that can let germs grow.
? Don't get a false sense of security if you buy organic produce. That just means less pesticide ? not necessarily fewer germs.
? Consider dropping especially risky foods from your diet. Bean sprouts are not safe for children, pregnant women or people with weak immune systems and certain diseases, but that doesn't mean they're OK for everyone else, said Michael Doyle, a microbiologist who heads the University of Georgia's Center for Food Safety.
Doyle also consults for a lot of food companies, including a major spinach producer that sought help after outbreaks involving that vegetable. He has chaired a food safety advisory council for McDonald's for many years.
"I don't eat sprouts at all," he said. If harmful bacteria are in the seeds "they grow in the sprouting process, and there's nothing to kill them unless you cook them."
You can go too far with this, though. Even Dr. Robert Tauxe, the CDC's top food-germ sleuth, once confessed over lunch that he refused to live in fear, and that there were only a few foods he absolutely wouldn't eat, such as raw oysters and unpasteurized milk.
Beyond that, safe handling and cooking can generally keep most foods safe, he said.
The big picture is important, said Robert Gravani, a food scientist at Cornell University.
A gazillion pounds of produce are consumed each day, and only a tiny fraction cause problems, he said.
"I have a hard time saying, `Don't eat produce,' because of all of the health benefits," he said. "Everything we do has some degree of risk attached to it."

Buy a Used Car Or Truck In Winter Time - Things You Must Consider
Many people these days are buying a vehicle just for winter driving, so they can protect their other vehicles from the salt, and the winter weather. There are many different things you will want to ask about or check when buying a vehicle for winter. Just becomes it seems to run well, does not guarantee you are getting a maintenance free vehicle to drive. Let us look at what you need to know about when you buy used car or truck in winter time.
How much do you have to spend will have a great impact on your purchasing power. A lot of time people do not realize that how much you have to spend can have a direct affect on the type of vehicle you can purchase. Keep this in mind before you go shopping for a car in the winter. Choose an amount you can afford, but will still get you the type of car you want.
We Buy Any Car
Front wheel drive or four wheel drive is another thing that you will need to think hard about as well. If you live in an area that tends to get little snow than front wheel drive should be fine for you. Now if you travel a lot and have heavy snows often, the four wheel drive is a better option. Always remember four wheel drive cars tend to cost more than front wheel drive.
Mileage is something that you must pay very close attention to these days. High mileage cars should be avoided unless they have great service records with them. By checking the mileage you will also be able to see if the purchase is worth the asking price. Also ask if these are highway mileage or all city mileage. This can make a big difference as well on the vehicles condition.
One area that many people tend to overlook when you buy used car or truck is the tires. Look them over very carefully and inquire about them. Tires can tell you a lot about the vehicle you are looking to purchase. Check for abnormal wear as that is an indication of front end troubles. Knowing how long the tires have been on the vehicle will give you a good idea when they will need replaced again.
The motor without a doubt is the most important part of your purchase. Check it out very closely. Take it for a test drive going at various speeds to see how well it performs. One thing to remember that many times you cannot spot engine trouble until after it warms up. Drive it for a little while instead of just taking it for a spin around the block.
What does the body look like? Many people will tell you it is for winter driving and they do not care. This can be a big mistake. You want to make sure the body is sound and there are not a lot of holes in it. Wind can come in these holes and make it chilly inside your vehicle. Check the body very closely before any purchase.
When it comes time to buy used car or truck in winter time, take your time before buying. Many times we fall in love with a car or truck without really thinking about it enough. Do not impulse buy when it comes to a vehicle and you will be fine.

Selling You Home With Out A Real Estate Agent
This article has been viewed 3 times.
If you happen to?re considering, ?I ought to promote my home without a realtor,? the present actual property market and explosion of the Internet will make your job easier.
Sell My Home With out A Realtor
In case you are trying to sell a home with out a realtor, you are often known as a ?FSBO? seller. FSBO stands for the phrase ?for sale by owner.? Though FSBO sellers have at all times existed, they?ve turn out to be rather more prevalent in the previous couple of years as a result of two main factors.
Scorching Real Estate Market
An insanely hot real estate market has made realtors somewhat irrelevant in lots of parts of the country. As an example, properties in San Diego, California had been known to be on the market for less than weeks on common in early 2005. Be mindful, this was the common time it took to sell a home including the run down messes. In such a market, many householders started wondering why they have been paying six % commissions to a realtor who didn?t need to do much.
Internet Use
The creation of FSBO actual estate listings websites has exploded over the past three or four years. As patrons and sellers became extra familiar with these websites, they often searched online for homes as an alternative of driving areas with a realtor. This resulted in sellers wondering why they need to pay a commission of 6 p.c to a realtor when a website like fsboamerica.org solely charged $25 a month to checklist a home on the site. Many couldn?t give you a reason.
No Realtor
The decision to promote you house without a realtor is one you need to make carefully. In case you?re comfortable with the gross sales course of, going FSBO makes all of the sense within the world. When you?re not snug with the negotiating process, then you could need to think about using a realtor. Ultimately, your first step ought to be to purchase a FSBO book in your local bookstore or visit a FSBO website and skim up on what is involved.

New scam on motor insurance claim
He submitted the third party claim to his insurance company - but the claim officer rejected the claim as he did not make a report at the time of the accident. He is now in a dilemma and does not know how to handle the third party claim.
His only recourse was to engage his own lawyer to fight the claim, but it would be costly. It was likely that the claim was fraudulent but it was quite sad that his insurance company was not assisting him on this matter.
New scam on time sharing
Recently, he was contacted by a service company who claimed to act for the developer. The told him that he had outstanding service payments on his time sharing unit and that the unit had some residual value. He was convinced to pay the fee to this service company to terminate the contract and claim back what was due to him.
After paying the service fee, he did some research and found that the service company was not connected with the developer. He had been scammed again.
Consumers should be careful and not attend presentations or meet people that they do not know. There are too many scams happening around. Some Singaporeans are easy targets due to their naivety.
home contents insurance :bus insurance understanding
Bus insurance decisions are quite important to enjoying your motorhome affordably and confidently. Nobody wants to drive through dangerous mountainous areas in a $100,000 motorhome and run off the shoulder only to find out your insurance policy won't cover you because you "live full time" in it, or you were too far from an established highway, or your policy isn't valid in Mexico, etc. Gather as much information on your proposed bus insurance policy as you can before buying.
If you have a new bus you may be eligible for Total Loss Replacement, which provides that if your bus is destroyed within its first five model years, you will get a brand new bus - even if it costs more than you paid for the original unit! Sometimes this kind of policy is not offered on commercial coaches but often is available for those who live in the bus or use it less frequently like churches. This motorhome insurance coverage is a great way to protect your investment from the effects of depreciation
During model years 6 through the life of your policy, many companies will pay the original purchase price toward the cost of a new bus. Whatever policy you purchase make sure it covers attached accessories such as awnings, satellite dishes, and air conditioning units, which can be very expensive to replace piece by piece with labor rates involved. |
Replacement cost bus insurance coverage is the newest and most popular coverage. In the event of total loss, you will receive a new unit of the same model, class, body type, size and equipment. Of course this is also the most expensive type of insurance.
Bus purchase price coverage - If you suffer a total loss, you will be reimbursed for the purchase price of the vehicle when you bought it.
Bus full timer insurance coverage is for those who live in their bus all the time, and do not have another residence, you need special coverage's including higher liability limits. These coverage's can be added to your policy to protect you. Most insurance companies do not understand full timers' needs and will not write this coverage for you. So make sure and discuss this upfront with your agent. Much like a homeowners policy, full time policies provide comprehensive personal liability bus insurance coverage that pays for bodily injury and property damage caused by an accident in which you are held liable. Auto policies don't provide full-timer coverage
Companies that own fleets of registered vehicles must work closely with an Insurance Agent to control and reduce the expense of their monthly insurance rates. An agent can help drivers and companies alike to save money by making their insurance coverage more comprehensive for their driving purposes. |
For instance, an insurance agent can recommend measures for keeping a car safe through the use anti-theft devices, which helps a vehicle to maintain a lower auto insurance premium, just by being more difficult to steal or vandalize.
Bus Personal effects coverage is good for people who prefer to purchase the additional addendum that covers personal valuables like clothing, cameras, dishes, sporting goods, jewelry, televisions, etc.) These can be typically covered against losses from most hazards.
Bus Vacation campsite liability coverage protects you up to your policy limits for your legal liability resulting from lawsuits if you are negligible in the use of your bus while using your unit as a residence.
Bus Emergency expense coverage protects your vacation or travel budget from the unexpected because it will pay for your hotel stays or your travel home when your bus is damaged or destroyed by a covered peril. See your policy for more details on bus insurance

Should I split my retirement investment options? | Roth Ira
I am in my mid 20s and have both a 401K as well as a Roth IRA and small amounts of stock. Am I spreading myself too thin? Should I focus all my efforts on one or the other in order to maximize my earning power for retirement? I am aware that I have time to be aggressive, but I lost quite a bit in the market after the tech crash and have yet to realiz my original investment from the stocks. Thanks.

Labour churning has social and economic cost
Most Singaporeans will not have much idea of the economics of the foreign worker recruiting system, since our daily lives are far removed from this issue. What I can’t figure out is whether civil servants at the Ministry of Manpower know much about it. If they don’t, the question would be: But isn’t it part of your job to know? If they do, then: How have you managed to ignore the injustices, and social and economic consequences of such a dysfunctional system for so long?

Financial system gets less stable
There is however one exception, our financial system - it seems to get less stable with each passing year and generates crisis, turmoil and recessions much more often that in the past yet we seem to accept this all encompassing system because most of us are born into or do not really understand what goes on in the banking system. Here is an interesting video that explains quite clear how money is created, how it drives the economy and why we are seeing so many crisis and so much in stability in the current system [Lucky Tan].

Hotel Deals Ireland
Read more at luxuryhotelsireland.orgDo not merely accept the price that is listed online. Hotels are frequently willing to negotiate their rates, rather than letting a room remain empty. Speak directly to the hotel and inquire about a room that may have a lower rate. You should also investigate if the inn has any promotions. Many hotels provide discount rates to military persons, seniors or frequent travelers.

Mid Week Breaks
If you have the luxury of being able to select your travel dates, make them work for you. Think about traveling during the off-season. Many quality hotels drop their standard rate by up to fifty percent in the off-season. You should consider planning mid-week breaks rather than weekend getaways. Weekend rates, as a rule, tend to be higher than those during the week.
Train4TradeSkills News: Will Ed Balls 5 point plan save the ...
Shadow Chancellor tries to stop the economy from being Balls-ed up and aims to create thousands of construction jobs.
The Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls has unveiled the Labour Party?s five-point plan to revitalise the economy.
Mr Balls was speaking at the Labour Party?s conference and has proposed plans to boost the economy by cutting VAT and offering tax breaks ? all to move things forward, start new projects and create new jobs.
Balls? 5-point plan for the economy includes:
? Repeating the bank bonus tax ? and using ?the money to build 25,000 affordable homes and guarantee a job for 100,000 young people?
? Bringing forward long-term investment projects, such as schools, roads and transport, to create jobs
? Reversing January?s ?damaging? VAT rise now for a temporary period
? Immediate one-year cut in VAT to 5% on home improvements, repairs and maintenance
? One-year national insurance tax break ?for every small firm which takes on extra workers, using the money left over from the government?s failed national insurance rebate for new businesses?
Of course these are Labour?s suggestions and the government don?t have to make these changes, but Mr Balls have said they would back the proposals if the coalition agreed to them.
Out of Balls? proposals, the one year VAT cut to 5% on home improvements would help the construction industry massively. Homeowners would get more repairs done on their homes and this would create new jobs for contractors. If they wanted to do the work themselves, the DIY industry would thrive.
Bringing forward stalled projects would also give the construction industry a much-needed boost. Deputy PM recently said that he wants to kick-start 40 new infrastructure projects and Balls? plans seem to be echoing that. If this does happen, it would provide a welcome boost for the industry and create new jobs.
What do you think about this ? will Balls? plans work? Let us know what you think and comment below or on our Facebook page.

Homeowners Insurance Not Cover Many Types of Damage
Every year in every state, property owners, many of which found that insurance policy that the landlord will not pay when their home was destroyed by geological processes such as earthquakes, soil, expansive, floods, hurricanes, landslides and subsidence. These homeowners might have the impression that the "total disaster" insurance policies, they will pay for almost any type of damage that they will be exposed to. But I feel the same way when I bought my first home owners insurance policy. I remember a prominent agent told me that it was a "total disaster" and feel good about that. I do not read policies word by word to see what it really covers - the previous policy of insurance issued by 50 leading companies in the insurance industry? Everyone assumed that they will cover everything. A few years later to work as a geologist who brought me in contact with the owners of many homes that do not fit together when their homes have been damaged by flooding, landslides, subsidence and other problems, I was surprised at that. Many people have been urged to ensure the rough.not by the company that I tend to think that the leaders of the indusstry insurance. "The thing that we do not cover." One day, I send my insurance company's policy is revised, and I decided to take a little time reading it. I want to find out if your policy will cover the same threat that I see others suffering? Sure enough, the policy statement, except that very clear. The list of exceptions is almost identical to the subject of environmental geology textbook. Have coverage for landslides, floods, mine subsidence, mud slides, mud flows, volcanic eruption, surface water, waste water, and a long list of other problems are not. I have looked in the statements excluded from homeowner's insurance policy number and my personal opinion is that the typical homeowner's insurance policy is not much more than fire and liability policy limits. - and some areas may be damaged by objects falling and the wind. Your homeowners insurance might not cover even half of what you think it will. Lessons that will take away from this. "Learning about geology before you buy a house" if the house has some of the geological risk, you should not buy it. You should know exactly what your risk and insurance to provide cover for themn or living in the house to inform you of your touch. Below I have done my best to summarize what many homeowners policies do not cover and provide links to more detailed information. To learn more on these topics can be found by reading books about environmental geology and environmental geology at the University. For specific information contact the website you can consult a geologist or geological exploration services in areas where housing is located. Earthquake insurance. Typical homeowners insurance policies do not cover damage from earthquakes. Homeowners in need of protection is normally required to purchase "a disaster" policy - a policy of insurance, earthquake. One way to do this is to ask your homeowners insurance agent if your policy provides coverage for earthquake. In some geographic areas, earthquake insurance is available through government-sponsored programs such as earthquakes in California. Many insurance agents can advise you about our company and the government provided protection against earthquakes in your area. Question many people ask the landlord is. "Do I need earthquake insurance?" There are a few situations where homeowners have earthquake insurance in order to comply with the requirements of a mortgage. But for most people the answer depends on where home is and the level of risk that homeowners will be willing to take. Small map on the right shows the geographical variability of the earthquake hazard. White areas on these maps are the least dangerous and most red zone. Earthquake insurance can be a very good idea in red and orange. If I lived in these areas, I will buy insurance. It is thought wise in the yellow area. The danger of an earthquake is reduced in the area of green, blue and white, if you live in one of these areas and want the peace of mind that you receive financial protection in case of damage and insurance to buy. good I live in southwestern Pennsylvania and did not have earthquake insurance - maybe I will not regret one day

Making the most of PR in the food and drink sector | Hotel and Jobs ...
The food and drink sector is especially competitive, and an effective PR strategy can give you and your product the edge.
Below are some tips on getting started.
Before you begin?
In order for your consumer PR to have any effect at all, you first need to ensure that your product is in the stores and available for customers to buy ? consumer titles won?t even consider promoting your product if it isn?t widely available. Likewise, the more stores you can get your product in to, the more likely you are to get press coverage.
Trade titles
If you have a new product that you want to shout about, this is the place to do it. When your press release is ready, call your chosen magazine. Explain briefly who you are, why you?re calling and what the press release is about, then ask who the best person to send it through to via email would be.
Once you?ve established these contacts, by sure to check in with the journalists regularly ? building a relationship can be extremely beneficial as it is more likely to lead to repeat coverage.
Consumer titles
While many consumer titles incorporate some food and drink coverage, opportunities are minimal and highly sought after.
Identify which titles are being read by your target market and focus your attention on these; it?s better to have a considered, targeted campaign applied where it matters than a blanket campaign that ends up being nothing more than a blip on journalists? radar.
There?s little point in targeting recipe pages as the vast majority of these are written in house; you best bet is ?Tried and Tested? and ?New in store? slots.
Try and establish a point of contact at each title so that they become familiar with you and your products ? you?re more likely to get positive feedback this way.
It?s also worth considering running competitions with consumer titles; guaranteed exposure for a small outlay (i.e. the cost of the prize) shouldn?t be undervalued.
Always be sure you have a plentiful supply of samples that you?re willing to send to journalists so they can review your products; it?s not a good idea to keep them waiting as it could reflect negatively on your business.

Class action on Pinnacle Notes
By GRACE LEONG (Business Times)
A lawsuit involving allegations that Morgan Stanley & Co Inc sold rigged Pinnacle Notes as 'safe, conservative' products to a group of Singaporean investors including Singapore's oldest credit cooperative, costing them US$154.7 million in investment losses, is making its way through federal court in Manhattan.
A hearing is scheduled for Sept 28 in which the US District Court for the Southern District of New York will decide whether the case can proceed in the US or whether it should be dismissed and heard in Singapore, The Business Times has learned.
If approved, the Singapore investors will seek class-action status.
NOTE:
Under a class action (in the USA), any compensation received will be shared by all investors in the class, including the investors who were not involved in lodging the original complaint. There is no provision for a class action suit in Singapore.

How to use private bankers
It is difficult for these advisers to help their clients in market timing or stock selection - as this is speculation and a zero-sum game. In fact, after allowing for the cost of transactions and fees, it is a negative sum game for the clients.
The best way to get a good yield on the investments is to invest in an index fund and to invest for the long term - to average out the good and bad years. There is little that the advisers can help the client to achieve a better yield.
I have seen many cases where the investor who had relied on the financial adviser to pick the manage the investments on their behalf - only to be disappointed with the bad results. The financial adviser probably did their best, but when the market is volatile, some investors will be at the wrong end, and the results can be disastrous. For each winner, there will be a loser - and after deducting fees and expenses, most investors (actually speculators) will be worse off.
To avoid speculation, you should learn how to invest for the long term. Read my book on financial planning (www.tankinlian.com/ishop) or attend the financial planning talk organized by FISCA (www.easysearch.sg/fisca).

John Hrabe: Dead Poets Society Lied: What the Movies Don't Teach You About Student Resistance
As a white, libertarian-leaning, middle-class kid, every scene of Dead Poets Society appealed to my maudlin sensibilities, and none more than the film's dramatic conclusion.
The school's headmaster Mr. Nolan warns, "One more outburst from you or anybody else, and you're out of this school." Ten students are undeterred. They defiantly stand on their desks and call out, "O Captain! My Captain!"
Prep school pi?ce de r?sistance. I was moved.
Movie critic Roger Ebert, on the other hand, was moved "to throw up."
"Dead Poets Society is a collection of pious platitudes masquerading as a courageous stand in favor of something: doing your own thing, I think," he wrote in the opening line of his scathing review.
Which makes me wonder what the fastidious movie critic would think of an alternate ending, one in which the students are punished by the school and then brought up on misdemeanor charges by the local district attorney for conspiracy and disrupting a meeting?
Oh wait, that isn't fiction, but the real life story of the "Irvine 11." In February 2010, members of UC Irvine's Muslim Student Association systematically interrupted a speech by Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren. On September 23, an Orange County jury found ten of the students guilty of misdemeanor charges and sentenced them to three years of informal probation.
Hollywood lied to us.
To be clear, I'm not defending the content of the protests, nor do I support the students' outbursts. Freedom of speech doesn't include a heckler's veto, and the students could have protested the ambassador in more constructive ways.
"Obviously, if we are going to have a free marketplace of ideas, people need to have a civil forum in which to speak," argues Dr. Craig Smith, Director of the Center for First Amendment Studies at California State University, Long Beach. "Such forums may be picketed and shouting can take place outside. However, speakers must be given the right to present their ideas without interruption if they are to make their case for their ideas."
But, Dr. Smith also wisely points out that the heckler's veto wasn't the only First Amendment question in this case. There was also the issue of whether Muslim students were singled out and selectively prosecuted because of their views.
"There is no doubt in my mind that the District Attorney selectively prosecuted," said Hussam Ayloush, Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations - Greater Los Angeles Area, "because the students were Muslim, the speaker was an Israeli diplomat, and the verbal protests centered on Israel's long history of war crimes."
It strains credulity to think that the politics of the speakers didn't affect the decision to prosecute. Had this been a raucous student council meeting about the cost of tuition, the case would have ended in a campus administrative hearing. You'd be laughed out of any prosecutor's office if you tried to turn it into a criminal case. Most hecklers not only avoid prosecution, but get a bigger platform because of their disruptions. Anyone remember Rep. Joe Wilson and Joe the Plumber?
In Orange County, Muslim Americans have other reasons to believe that there's a double standard for free speech. Earlier this year, Villa Park City Councilwoman Deborah Pauly protested an Islamic charity event and exclaimed, "I know quite a few Marines who will be very happy to help these terrorists to an early meeting in paradise." Just this month, San Juan Capistrano City Councilman Derek Reeve said at a council meeting that he named his dog Muhammad to intentional provoke Muslim Americans and make a statement about free speech. These incidents explain why Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the UC Irvine School of Law, described the verdict as keeping an "open wound" in the community.
If you protect the offensive, anti-Islamic rhetoric of Orange Curtain councilmembers, you have to protect the rights of the UC Irvine Muslim Student Association. As Ayloush put it, "No topic should be off limits and no public official or country should be above criticism."
When controversial speakers are prosecuted under ridiculous "disturbing the peace" statutes, it sets up a forced choice for freedom. Every speaker must live in fear of prosecution, or worse, only the dissenting speakers get quashed. Either scenario is unacceptable because both outcomes lead to less speech.
Our natural reaction to contrasting views should always be to speak out ourselves, not shut our opponents up. Muslim students get the same First Amendment protections as Israeli ambassadors. I'm entitled to my review of Dead Poets Society; and Roger Ebert has a right to his -- even if he's wrong.

Advisers acted honestly but gave bad advice
The adviser might have acted honestly but gave the wrong advice, due to being naive. The advisers desperately needed a job, e.g. they have just graduated. They were taught about the positive aspects of the financial product (e.g. life insurance policy or structured product) but did not know about the negative aspects (i.e. the high charges and high risk). They honestly sold the financial product to their friends and family members thinking that they are giving good advice.
When they learned later about the negative aspects, they felt quite bad about letting down the people who trusted them and left the business quietly.
Their agency managers knew the full picture, but exploited the ignorance of the newcomers. Some advisers or agents, who later learned the tricks, decided to continue the game and make a lot of money for themselves.
I do not wish to imply that all agency managers or experienced advisers are dishonest. I know of a few who are honest and acted in the best interest of their customers. But there are dishonest or naive advisers as well, so consumers should be wary.
House passes FY2012 ... - American Society of Military Comptrollers
Early this morning, the House passed (219Y-203N) a FY2012 Continuing Resolution (CR) that would keep the government operating until November 18, 2011.? Passage came a little more than a day after the House had rejected essentially the same bill.?
On Wednesday, the House failed to approve the CR as 48 Republicans voted against the bill and only six Democrats supported it.? After that vote, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) met with Republican members in an effort to persuade enough Republican members to change their vote and ensure passage.? Otherwise, he reportedly told the group, he would have to strike a deal with Democrats to gain their support by shedding the $1.5 billion offset to disaster assistance funding included in the bill.? His efforts appear to have succeeded as 24 Republicans switched their votes when the bill came up for a vote again.
The House-passed CR would fund government agencies between October 1 and November 18 at a rate of $1.043 trillion, the amount for FY2012 set in the Budget Control Act of 2011.? The bill also includes $3.65 billion in disaster relief assistance for Hurricane Irene, recent wildfires, floods and tornadoes, the Mid-Atlantic earthquake, and other natural disasters.?
The House-passed bill includes offsets of $1.6 billion to disaster funding.? In addition to a $1.5 billion cut from the Department of Energy?s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program included in the original House bill, ?the CR adds a $100 million rescission from another Department of Energy program involving loan guarantees to the energy firm Solyndra.? Solyndra has recently has declared bankruptcy and has come under federal investigation.? Almost all House Democrats opposed any offsets to disaster funding.
Rep. Harold Rogers (R-KY), chair of the House Appropriations Committee (HAC) urged the Senate to act quickly on the House bill.? But, Senate Democrats are unwilling to accept both the House bill?s low level of disaster funding and any offsets to that funding.?
Earlier this month, the Senate passed a bill that provides $6.95 billion to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for disaster assistance, without offsets. ?In a statement after the House vote, Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) pressed for the higher disaster funding level and said the Senate will reject the House bill.
So, with both the House and Senate wanting to go on recess next week and FY2012 only eight days away, congressional leaders of both parties will have to resolve their differences quickly if they want to avoid what almost everyone in Congress professes not to want:? a government shutdown.
