All states will apply the same basic principles in calculating child support payments to be made and these will generally be as follows:
1. The needs of the child will be paramount in the decision of a family law judge in making an order for child support and these needs will be the likes of day care, education, health insurance and any special needs of the child;
2. The needs and income of the custodial parent;
3. The ability of the non-custodial parent to pay;
4. The child’s general standard of living before the breakup of the parent’s relationship.
